Clementine benefits: vitamin C and nutritional value

Sweet, seedless and easy to peel: clementines are the perfect fruit for the cold season. But what do they really contain, and what are their benefits? Here is what the nutritional values say, with no miracle promises.

Clementines are a source of vitamin C

One hundred grams of clementines provide about 45–50 mg of vitamin C, more than half of the daily nutrient reference value (80 mg). This makes clementines a source of vitamin C, a vitamin that:

  • contributes to the normal function of the immune system;
  • contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress;
  • contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums and teeth;
  • increases iron absorption;
  • contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Clementine nutritional value

Indicative values per 100 g of edible portion (sources: CREA and USDA nutrition databases):

  • Energy: about 45 kcal
  • Water: about 87 g
  • Carbohydrates: about 10–12 g, of which sugars about 9 g
  • Fibre: about 1.5–2 g
  • Fat: less than 0.5 g
  • Vitamin C: about 45–50 mg

They are mostly water and relatively low in calories: an average clementine weighs about 70–80 g.

A practical snack for the whole family

Seedless clementines peel in seconds, are not messy and have no seeds to remove: perfect for school, work or the gym. They also pair well with salads, fruit salads, fish and white meat.

Are clementines good for cholesterol?

It is a common question, but there are currently no authorised health claims in the European Union linking clementines to lower cholesterol. Clementines are a tasty, nutritious fruit to include in a varied diet: for specific health needs, your doctor or nutritionist remains the reference.

How to enjoy them

  • Fresh, at room temperature: the flavour is fuller.
  • Juiced, and drunk straight away so as not to lose vitamin C.
  • In the kitchen: find plenty of ideas in our citrus recipes.
