Product description

Our Vanilla oranges grow in our family citrus groves in the Sibari Plain, Calabria, and are picked by hand only when you order. They are blond oranges with a unique character: very sweet with very low acidity, so much so that people tasting them for the first time are surprised by how delicate they are.

Vanilla orange characteristics

  • Taste: sweet and mellow, without the tangy note typical of other oranges.
  • Flesh: pale, juicy, with few seeds.
  • Peel: thin and smooth, easy to peel.
  • Season: roughly from December to April.
  • No post-harvest treatments: the fruit reaches you just as it was picked from the tree.

How to enjoy them

They are perfect eaten in segments, as a snack or after a meal, and make a sweet, low-acid juice. They also work well in fruit salads, salads and desserts, where their natural sweetness lets you cut down on added sugar.

Vanilla or Navel?

If you love delicate flavours, Vanilla is your orange. If you prefer the classic taste, with the right balance of sweet and tangy, try our Navel oranges, available from late November.

Shipping

We ship citrus every Monday and Tuesday, so the fruit we send is always freshly picked.

Delivery times depend on the destination and the courier. We ship with SDA or BRT, which usually deliver within 48-72h of dispatch.

Please note!
Between Black Friday and Christmas, deliveries may be delayed because couriers handle a very high volume of parcels. This is not a problem for our fruit: even if it spends 1-2 extra days in transit, freshly picked citrus stays fresh.

The citrus is shipped directly from our farm and picked by hand, to protect the delicate fruit.

Vanilla oranges: frequently asked questions

Why is it called a Vanilla orange?

The name does not refer to a vanilla flavour but to its sweetness: the Vanilla orange is a blond orange with very low acidity, so it tastes sweet and delicate, almost "vanilla-like".

When is Vanilla orange season?

We harvest them roughly from December to April, when the fruit is ripe on the tree. We pick by hand only when you order. Out of season you can click "Notify me when available" to get an email as soon as we reopen orders.

Why is the Vanilla orange so sweet?

Because it contains very little acid: without the usual tangy note of other oranges, the sweet taste of the flesh comes through. People used to traditional oranges find it surprisingly mellow and delicate.

Does the Vanilla orange have seeds?

Only a few. The flesh is pale and juicy, the peel thin and smooth, and seeds are rare.

Can they be used for juice?

Yes: they make a sweet, low-acid juice. As with all fresh juice, we recommend drinking it right after squeezing to enjoy it at its best. You'll find more tips in our guide to the best oranges for juicing.

What is the difference between Vanilla and Navel oranges?

Both are blond oranges, but with different characters: Vanilla is very sweet with almost no acidity, while Navel oranges have the classic balance of sweet and tangy, are seedless and arrive earlier, from late November. If you love delicate flavours choose Vanilla; if you prefer the traditional orange taste choose Navel.

How should oranges be stored?

In a cool, dry place away from heat, Vanilla oranges keep well for one to two weeks; in the fruit drawer of the fridge, even longer. Avoid closed bags, let them breathe and check them now and then, removing any bruised fruit. Since we apply no post-harvest treatments, we recommend enjoying them fresh.

When do you ship and how long does delivery take?

We ship every Monday and Tuesday, right after harvesting, with BRT or SDA couriers: delivery usually takes 48–72 hours from dispatch, anywhere in Italy. The shipping cost is already included in the price.

What if some fruit arrives damaged?

Write to us with a photo and the weight of the damaged fruit: we refund the damaged kilos or, if you prefer, issue a voucher to use on your next order. We handle every report promptly.
